The long seafront boulevard on the Black Sea is the heart of life in Batumi, running beside the pebble beach through gardens, palms and pines, with walkways, a red cycle lane, cafés, fountains and statues, busy with strollers from morning until midnight. At its northern end near the port stand the landmarks of the modern city: the old white lighthouse, the Ferris wheel, the Alphabet Tower and the moving Ali and Nino sculpture. Along its length are eye-catching buildings, such as the Summer Theatre with its ornate facade, and broad gardens with shade and fountains. Visitors rent bicycles and e-bikes to ride the boulevard or stroll slowly between the cafés and the stands selling grilled corn and ice cream, heading down to the beach for a swim in summer. At sunset everyone turns towards the sea, then the towers and fountains light up and the evening begins. Walking is free and always open. The beach is pebbles rather than sand, so bring water shoes; early mornings and evenings are the best times, as summer middays are hot and humid.
