The district that housed the foreign legations in Beijing between 1861 and 1959, known in Chinese by the name of the lane that runs through it, Dongjiaominxiang. At 1,552 m it is the longest hutong of old Beijing, running east from the south-east corner of Tiananmen Square to Chongwenmen. Its tree-shaded sides are lined with European-style buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, among them former legations, old banks and a church. After 1959 the foreign embassies moved out to Sanlitun, and today the quarter is a quiet street to stroll, away from the crowds of the square. Walking the lane is free at any hour, and one stop along it is the China Court Museum in the old Yokohama Specie Bank building, free with booking from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides.
