BioParque do Rio is Rio de Janeiro's zoo, renovated and renamed, at the back of the Quinta da Boa Vista park in São Cristóvão. Its story goes back to the city's first zoo, founded by the Baron of Drummond in 1870 in Vila Isabel with Emperor Pedro II's permission and moved to its present site on 18 March 1945. It shows animals from the Amazon, the Pantanal and the cerrado, such as the maned wolf, anteaters, the king vulture and small primates, alongside species from other continents, on about 55,000 m². A visit takes two to four hours. It opens Wednesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00), and every day in January, February, July and on public holidays. Tickets are about R$61 in the regular season and R$69 in high season, half price for children 3-11 and free under 3. Outside food and picnics are not allowed, to protect the animals, and there are restaurants inside.
