The Samba Museum in Mangueira, in Rio's North Zone, at the foot of the hill that gave birth to one of Brazil's most famous samba schools, is dedicated to preserving the memory of carioca samba, the music and dance that became the city's symbol and part of Brazil's cultural heritage. It tells the story of samba through photographs, documents, recordings, costumes and objects from the carnival and from the lives of its great artists, and has run long exhibitions on Mangueira's two icons, the composer and singer Cartola and his wife Dona Zica. It also holds temporary exhibitions, educational activities and music sessions. The museum usually opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00; a full ticket is about R$20, with half price for students and exemptions for groups including small children and older visitors. Call ahead to confirm times, and combine the visit with a walk in the area or a samba school rehearsal in season.
