Bissau Cathedral, in full the Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelaria, is Guinea-Bissau's main Catholic church, on Avenida Amílcar Cabral in the centre of the capital. It is known for its two white towers with pointed red roofs. Curiously, its north tower also serves as a lighthouse, guiding ships through the Geba estuary into the port of Bissau. Work on the present church began on 28 May 1935 over an older building, at the initiative of the missionary priest José Pinheiro. The architect Vasco Regaleira drew up a design in 1942, which was revised in 1945. It was consecrated in December 1950 and has been the seat of the Diocese of Bissau since its creation in 1977. You see a white facade with a large round window above the arched entrance, and twin towers with narrow windows and red pyramid roofs, a cross between them. A broad stair and small fenced square lie in front. From nearby streets the towers rise above the city's roofs. Bissau Velho is about 300 metres away in a straight line. Dress modestly and respect Mass times. Ask before taking photos inside.
