The Monte Serrat funicular is a historic line climbing to the top of Monte Serrat hill in central Santos. It was planned in 1910, built from 1923 and opened in June 1927, when a famous casino stood on the summit; after gambling was banned in Brazil following the Second World War, the operating company became a family business. The ride takes about four minutes on a single 242-metre track with a passing loop in the middle where the two cars cross. Each now carries forty passengers, down from seventy in the past, and they are hauled by a steel cable able to bear ninety tonnes. The summit gives a wide view over old central Santos, the port, the city's beaches and São Vicente island, with historic buildings and space to stroll. A long stairway offers a free way up for those who prefer to walk. Avoid rainy days, as the slopes are monitored in the wet season.
