A massive stone fort on the highest point of the Mahdia peninsula, built in the Ottoman era in the sixteenth century to defend the town and the coast. It looks down over Cap Afrique and the white seaside cemetery that runs down to the water. The fort is square with towers at its corners. You enter through a gate into an inner courtyard surrounded by vaulted halls, and you can climb up and walk along the ramparts. The ramparts give Mahdia's finest view: sea on three sides, the lighthouse at the tip of the cape, the remains of the Fatimid harbour cut into the rock, and the white tombs of the seaside cemetery on the slope. It is a few minutes' walk from the medina. Come just before sunset, then walk down to the cape to watch the sun drop into the sea.
