The largest and best-preserved castle on Djerba and one of the island's most visited sights. It stands on the sea north of Houmt Souk near the fishing port, over the ruins of the old Roman town. It was built at the end of the fourteenth century on the orders of the Hafsid sultan and extended in 1450. It takes its name from the commander Ghazi Mustapha, who settled on Djerba in 1559, when the island was contested by the Mediterranean powers along this coast. You enter through a gateway into a broad courtyard ringed by high walls with corner towers, holding halls, the remains of older buildings and excavations revealing layers older than the castle. Climb onto the walls for views of the sea, the harbour and the fishing boats. The borj has been a listed historic monument since 1904. The visit is short and enjoyable and pairs with the Houmt Souk markets in half a day. It is closed on Fridays.
