The Bosque da Barra Municipal Nature Park is a 50-hectare reserve in Barra da Tijuca in western Rio de Janeiro, one of the area's most visited green spaces and an ecological island in a heavily built-up district. It keeps the original features of restinga, the coastal sandy-plain vegetation, with sandy ground, marshes and wetlands, and holds endangered plant species. A population of broad-snouted caimans lives there, so used to people that they sometimes come close to the picnic areas, along with birds and marmosets. Around a large lake spread wooded stretches, avenues, volleyball courts, football pitches, wide lawns and playgrounds, a dirt track for running, walking and cycling, and an environmental education centre. There are no shops inside, so bring water and food. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, morning to late afternoon, with free entry; check the hours.
