Bosque Rodrigues Alves, in full the Botanical and Zoological Garden of the Amazon, is a piece of Amazon rainforest preserved in Belém's Marco district. The Baron of Marajó came up with the idea, and it opened in 1883, under Emperor Pedro II, as the Marco da Légua Municipal Park. It holds more than 300 plant species and 58 animal species and receives about 20,000 visitors a month; in 2008 it gained botanical-garden status and joined the international network of botanic gardens. Its shady paths among giant trees are a refuge from the city heat and suit a short family outing. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-17:00 and closes on Mondays for maintenance. Tickets are a token R$2, R$1 for children 7-12, free for children up to 6 and seniors, and free for everyone on the last weekend of each month.
