If you are heading to the Military Museum or the nearby university: yes, it rounds out the day. In itself, for a stroll and plant love in spring and summer, it is lovely, but it is far from the historic centre's sights. If time is short in Utrecht: the old centre comes first, this for a quiet second day.

Utrecht University's Botanic Gardens are a large green oasis on the city's edge (the Uithof campus), gathering thousands of plants from around the world in themed areas — a rock garden, a forest, a herb garden, tropical glasshouses with their hot humid climates, and a summer butterfly garden. Their strength is variety and calm: a large space to stroll and relax away from the centre's bustle, with paths among rare plants and scientific labels. Part of it is a historic fort (from the UNESCO-listed New Dutch Waterline defence) turned garden, so it joins nature with Dutch military history. For families, plant lovers and the calm-seeking: a pleasant green break, especially in spring and summer. A little east of the centre near the university and the Military Museum.
