Southern sunset

A green, grassy hill between two bays on Lombok's south coast, beside Tanjung Aan beach, now one of the best-known sunset spots on the whole island. The climb is short and easy up a grassy slope, and the summit gives a wide view over turquoise Tanjung Aan bay on one side and another bay and rolling hills on the other. At sunset the scene turns orange and pink, water buffalo grazed by villagers sometimes appear on the hills, and visitors sit on the grass to watch the sun sink into the ocean. The place is wide and open, good for photographs and a picnic. The fee is a token one, usually paid at the car park. There is no shade on the hill, so late afternoon beats midday; bring water. Combine it with Tanjung Aan beach in one visit: swim in the morning or afternoon, then climb an hour before sunset. It is about a quarter of an hour's drive from Kuta.
