On Plaza 9 de Julio.
The Cabildo of Salta is a white colonial building with two tiers of arcades and a tower on Plaza 9 de Julio in the heart of Salta, the seat of the city's authorities from 1626 to 1888. The present building was begun around 1780, its tower added years later, and it housed the government and the police. Sold at public auction in 1889, it became shops and a hotel and was partly demolished, until the architect Mario Buschiazzo restored it to its colonial form in 1945. Today it holds the Historical Museum of the North, with rooms on the region's history from before the Spanish to independence, arcaded inner courtyards and an upper balcony over the square. Entry is free. It opens Tuesday to Friday 09:00-17:00, Saturday 14:00-18:00 and Sunday 10:00-14:00, and closes on Mondays, with guided tours Tuesday to Friday at 12:00 and 15:00.
