The San Bernardo cable car rises from San Martín Park in Salta to the top of San Bernardo hill above the city in about eight minutes. It opened on 12 January 1988, running 1,016 metres and climbing about 285 metres with 25 small gondolas. From the top the city of Salta opens out, with its grid of streets, colonial houses and cathedral, and the Lerma valley and its ring of mountains beyond. The summit has gardens, fountains, small artificial waterfalls, a café and walking paths. You can ride up and walk down a long stairway of more than a thousand steps, or the other way round, and the steps are free. The best time is just before sunset, as the city lights come on.
