One of Latin America's best zoos, on both banks of the Cali River among big trees, showing animals of Colombia and South America in large enclosures modelled on their habitats: Andean condors, jaguars, Andean bears, tapirs, Amazon monkeys and colourful macaws. You walk shaded paths between sections, including a suspension bridge over the river, a butterfly house where hundreds of colourful butterflies fly around you, an aquarium of river and sea fish, and African and Asian sections. The zoo rescues and rehabilitates wild animals and runs breeding programmes for threatened species, with educational displays for children. It is ideal for families and needs at least half a day. Midday is hot, so mornings are best, when the animals are more active. Buy tickets online at weekends to avoid queues.
