Cali's oldest and loveliest district, on a small hill west of the centre, with narrow climbing streets and single-storey colonial houses with colourful walls, wooden windows and tiled roofs. It has become the quarter of artists, small cafés, guesthouses and craft shops. At the top is a hilltop park where Cali's people gather at sunset to see the whole city spread across the valley beneath the mountains as the sky turns orange. In the evening it fills with vendors, families and musicians, and sometimes folk storytellers. Cali is known as the «world capital of salsa», and in and around the district are dance schools offering beginner classes. The city's food is famous for tropical fruit juices such as «lulo» and for «empanadas». The district is calm and pleasant by day and early evening, but avoid dark lanes at night and use taxis. Many governments advise caution in Colombia, and in some departments especially, so check your own government's travel advice before the trip.
