An interactive science centre on the bank of the Garonne in the docks area north of central Bordeaux, aimed at families and school groups, with changing exhibitions on science, technology and the environment. The premise is experiment rather than display: apparatus to handle, experiments to run and stations the visitor takes part in. That makes it among the best options in Bordeaux with children, particularly on a wet day. Exhibitions change several times a year and cover entirely different subjects — from space to food to artificial intelligence — so there is no permanent collection to know in advance. Check the programme before going to see whether the current subject suits the ages you have with you. Its location is in the docks area, redeveloped from an industrial harbour into a cultural quarter, which also holds the Bassins des Lumières in the old submarine base. Practical points: entry is ticketed with family rates. It usually closes one day a week. Reach it by tram from central Bordeaux.

The Bassins des Lumières in the old submarine base a short walk away, with large-scale digital art projected onto vast concrete walls. Together they make a coherent half day in the docks, and both are indoors so they suit a wet day.
