**A façade of white, pink and black marble carved like a piece of jewellery — built by a mercenary captain to bury himself in** — adjoining Santa Maria Maggiore. **Bartolomeo Colleoni** — the **condottiero** who commanded Venice's armies — built it between **1472 and 1476** as **his personal mausoleum**. ⚠ **He demolished the neighbouring church's sacristy to make room** when the Church refused him the land — **he built his tomb by force**. ✅ **The façade is first-rank Renaissance work**: **coloured marble laid in geometric patterns**, **rose windows**, **relief carving** of biblical scenes and **twisted columns** — a rare density of ornament. ✅ **Inside is his tomb** beneath a gilded equestrian figure, **with a ceiling painted by Tiepolo** in the 18th century. ⚠ **His coat of arms on the gate** is rubbed for luck until it shines.

**Commanders of hired armies who sold their services to Italy's cities — and some grew richer and stronger than its princes.** ✅ **The need**: late-medieval **Italian cities** were commercially rich **but their people were merchants and craftsmen, not soldiers**, **and their wars with one another were continual**. **So instead of conscripting citizens, they bought war ready-made.** ✅ **The contract**: the commander signed a **condotta** — a contract — with the city, **hence the name**: he supplied a complete trained army for money, for a fixed term. ✅ **The leverage**: the best captains became **indispensable** — **so they negotiated enormous fees, estates and titles**, **and sometimes turned on their employers** or crossed to the other side. **Several founded ruling dynasties** (the Sforza in Milan, the Montefeltro in Urbino). ✅ **Colleoni is the complete example**: he led **Venice's** armies for decades, **became «captain general for life»**, **and accumulated an enormous fortune** — ⚠ **with which he built this mausoleum**, **demolishing the church sacristy to put it in the best position** when his request was refused. ✅ **He also has a famous equestrian statue in Venice** by Verrocchio.
