The Casa de Gobierno is the seat of Tucumán's provincial government and a National Historic Monument, facing Plaza Independencia, the main square of San Miguel de Tucumán. Governor Luis Nougués wanted it in the early twentieth century as a palace worthy of the most populous province of the north, replacing the old colonial town council building. The engineer Domingo Selva designed it in an eclectic style blending French baroque with Italianate touches and art nouveau ornament, its facades faced in artificial stone imitating Paris stone. Building began in 1908, and Governor José Frías Silva and President Roque Sáenz Peña opened it on 9 July 1912. Lit up at night, it becomes the finest sight on the square. The facade is free to view, and guided visits of the first floor are offered; ask about times at the side entrance on San Martín street.
