The House of the Baron of Camocim is a late-19th-century eclectic mansion on Rua General Sampaio in central Fortaleza. Its title came from Germiniano Maia, a native of Aracati in Ceará, who received the title of Baron of Camocim from the imperial family around 1880. It is said to have been the only home of its day with a lift, which caught the attention of the city's aristocracy, and its semi-sunken lower floor, built to house servants, has fuelled debate about colonial features in its design. The city expropriated and listed it around 2006–2007, but it stayed closed for years and was used as a store. After a restoration covering floors, walls and timberwork, it was handed to the city culture department in late 2017 and opened on 30 August 2018 as a cultural centre focused on the visual arts, part of the Vila das Artes complex. It hosts changing exhibitions; check times.
