Cascatinha Taunay is the highest waterfall in Tijuca National Park, the forest covering Rio de Janeiro's mountains, dropping about 35 metres in the park's Floresta sector. It is named after the French painter Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, who lived nearby in the early 1800s, and a stone bridge from the same century stands on the way. Much of the forest around it was replanted from 1861, when Emperor Pedro II ordered the reforestation of the Tijuca slopes cleared for coffee, to protect the city's water supply. It sits close to the road in the Floresta sector at Alto da Boa Vista, free to enter daily 8:00-17:00.
