The Centro Cultural Oscar Niemeyer, opened on 30 March 2006 in the south-west of Goiânia, is a cultural complex on a vast concrete platform, the Esplanada Juscelino Kubitschek, a 26,000 m² square for exhibitions, performances and concerts. Its buildings play off one another: white geometric volumes for the Museum of Contemporary Art of Goiás and the Palácio da Música, a smoked-glass box for the library, and the great red triangle of the Monument to Human Rights. Niemeyer said what pleased him most was the esplanade itself, 'for its innovative aspect', and his nephew João Niemeyer supervised its design and construction. Throughout, the complex honours artists from Goiás: the library is named after the writers Bernardo Élis and J. J. Veiga. Exhibition hours vary, but are usually Tuesday to Friday 9:00-17:00 and weekends 11:00-17:00.
