The Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão is a cultural space in São Luís's historic centre that hosts national and international exhibitions and gives Maranhão artists room to show their work, along with workshops, performances, small concerts, film screenings, courses, talks and launches of books and other cultural products. It occupies the old Liceu Maranhense, the state's historic secondary school, fully restored in 2012 in a project sponsored by the mining company Vale. In 2017 it was refitted to a design by Marcelo Rosenbaum, bringing in references to Maranhão culture, such as indigenous art and the bumba-meu-boi festival, along with lace, basketry and ceramics, in works made by artists and craftspeople of the state and its indigenous peoples. Its first exhibition, in 2014–2015, was «A Contemporary Look at Indigenous Arts». It makes a short visit on a walk through the historic centre; check current exhibitions.
