Praça João Lisboa is one of the oldest squares in São Luís, capital of Maranhão, and the scene of many historic events in the city and state. It was first called «Largo do Carmo» and renamed in 1901 in honour of the journalist and writer João Francisco Lisboa, one of the city's most distinguished sons. The square shrank over time, above all as cars arrived and roads were cut through in the 20th century, and Rua da Paz split it in two: the northern part, between Rua da Paz and Rua do Sol, is popularly called Praça João Lisboa, and the southern part keeps the old name, Largo do Carmo. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage historic centre of São Luís and has been separately listed by the national heritage institute since 1951. Locals call it «the heart, the soul and the nerve centre» of São Luís, with its shade trees, mosaic-paved walk and benches, and cafés and kiosks around it. It is a few steps from the Arthur Azevedo Theatre and the Historical and Artistic Museum of Maranhão, a good start for a walk through the old town and its Portuguese tiles.
