A lookout on a green hill north of Antigua, marked by a large stone cross, with the finest view of the city: the grid of straight streets, red-tiled roofs and white domes, and behind them the huge cone of Agua volcano rising above the valley. Visitors climb steps and a path through pine and oak in about twenty minutes from the edge of town, or drive to a car park near the top. At the summit is a broad terrace with benches, giant fig trees with sprawling roots and a monument to the city's founder. The best times are early morning, when the volcano is clear before clouds gather, or just before sunset as the light warms over the city. On clear days the Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes appear to the west. The path once saw robberies, so tourist police now patrol it by day; climb during daylight and with others.
