The Cine-Theatro Central is a theatre in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, designed by the architect Raphael Arcuri in an eclectic style, with an Art Deco-tinged façade and neoclassical interior decoration including Italian-style murals by the painter Angelo Bigi. It opened on 30 March 1929 and is one of the city's postcard sights, on Praça João Pessoa on Rua Halfeld, the main shopping street. The city's elite wanted a grand cultural space, and the «Companhia Central de Diversões» was formed in 1927 to build it, a landmark for a city that until the 19th century had known only makeshift stages or humble houses where travelling troupes performed. It was listed by the national heritage institute in 1994. Today the theatre hosts concerts, plays and dance, and its auditorium with its decoration and murals is one of the finest in Minas Gerais. Tickets by programme; it can be seen from outside at any time.
