Halfeld Park sits on a prime corner where Avenida Rio Branco meets Rua Halfeld in Juiz de Fora; it is the city's first public square and one of its key symbols, a meeting place and space for leisure and culture. Its land belonged to the German engineer Henrique Halfeld, one of the city's planners, and was bought by the council in 1854. First known as the «Municipal Square» and then the «Municipal Garden», it was neglected until 1879, used for circus tents, horse shows and travelling entertainments. That year its landscaping began to a plan by the architect Miguel Antônio Lallemant, finished in 1880, and in 1901 Colonel Francisco Mariano Halfeld, Henrique's son, renovated it at his own expense. Today the park is a green space in the heart of the shopping district, with shade trees, paths, benches and kiosks, where people gather to meet and rest, a few steps from the Cine-Theatro Central. Visit by day.
