A large fountain in Kutaisi's Central Square, designed by the architect David Gogichaishvili in 2011, which has become a symbol of the city and its ancient past: Kutaisi was a centre of ancient Colchis, the land Jason and the Argonauts sailed to in search of the Golden Fleece in Greek myth. The fountain is decorated with about thirty gilded animal figures, including lions, rams, deer and mountain goats, each a carefully enlarged copy of jewellery and bronze or gold figurines found at Colchian archaeological sites such as Vani, whose originals are kept in the Georgian National Museum. At the top stand two golden horses facing each other, surrounded by jets of water on several tiers. It is lit in changing colours at night, and historic buildings, including the opera house, line the square. Viewing is free and possible at any hour; it is at its best after sunset when the fountain is lit. It sits in the heart of the city, minutes from the central market and the White Bridge over the Rioni.
