Two neighbouring complexes on tree-shaded Guozijian Street in Dongcheng, on one ticket: the Temple of Confucius, built in 1302 under the Yuan and the second largest in China after the one in Qufu, and the Guozijian, the Imperial Academy, the country's highest seat of learning under the Yuan, Ming and Qing until it closed in 1905. Ancient cypresses shade the temple courtyards, where 198 stone tablets carry the names of more than 51,000 scholars who passed the highest imperial examinations; in the academy stands the square Biyong Hall in a round pool, where emperors came to lecture, approached through a gateway faced with glazed tiles. Tickets are CNY 30, and it is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm from May to October, last entry 5 pm, and to 5 pm in winter, closed on Mondays, or on Tuesdays instead in July and August, per visitor guides.
