Hue's largest and oldest market, on the north bank of the Perfume River next to the Truong Tien Bridge. It began outside the citadel's eastern gate under Emperor Gia Long, burned in 1885, and moved to its present site in 1899 on the orders of Emperor Thanh Thai; it has been rebuilt several times since. Inside are stalls of fresh vegetables and fish, clothing, the conical hats Hue is known for, handicrafts, and dried and preserved foods such as sesame candy and shrimp paste. Halal food is hard to find in Hue, so plan meals ahead. The market is busiest early in the morning. Many goods have no marked price, so agree on one before buying.
