A Timurid ensemble in the heart of Shahrisabz whose name means «house of Quran recitation». It brings together the mausoleum of Sheikh Shamsuddin Kulal, the Gumbazi Sayyidan («Dome of the Sayyids») and the Kok Gumbaz, or «Blue Dome», Mosque around a raised courtyard. The oldest part is the tomb of Shamsuddin Kulal, a revered Sufi sheikh who died in 1370; Timur ordered it built, and his father, Amir Taraghay, was buried at the sheikh's feet. Timur's grandson Ulugh Beg completed the complex in the 1430s, adding the Blue Dome Mosque in the name of his father Shah Rukh and then the Gumbazi Sayyidan in 1438. The Blue Dome Mosque served as the Friday mosque of Shahrisabz; its great hall rises to a dome clad in turquoise tiles, and one of its inscriptions reads «The rule belongs to God». The Gumbazi Sayyidan keeps old marble gravestones carved with the names of sayyids, which gave the tomb its name. Tickets are about 30,000 som, per visitor guides, and modest dress is expected at this religious site. Dor us-Siyodat is about 200 m to the east, and Ak-Saray about 1.3 km north.
