The house of **Holger Drachmann**, the odd one out among the Skagen painters because he was not only a painter: he was a **poet**, novelist, playwright and journalist, and one of the best-known public figures in Denmark of his day. He bought the house in 1902 โ originally a fisherman''s cottage โ and lived there through his last years until his death in 1908. The interior is entirely unlike the quiet Ancher house: strong colours, walls covered in paintings, photographs and mementoes, and mixed furniture. The house reflects its owner โ loud, volatile and theatrical. On show are his own paintings (chiefly marine: storms, waves and ships), works given to him by his friends in the group, and his manuscripts and tools. Note: Drachmann wrote patriotic texts and songs still sung today, among them the **Midsummer song** performed across Denmark every 23 June around the evening bonfires. Note: **the house is very small and its hours are short and seasonal** โ it closes entirely in winter.
Paintings, photographs and mementoes reflecting a loud personality.
Storms, waves and ships, his central subject.
Works given to him by the other Skagen painters.

The three โ **Skagens Museum**, **Anchers Hus** and **Drachmanns Hus** โ are run by one foundation and sell a **combined ticket** clearly cheaper than three separate ones, bought at any of them and valid several days. If you will visit two of the three it already pays. โ The logical order is **Skagens Museum first**, because it explains the whole group and puts the two houses in context โ visiting the houses before it loses half their meaning. โ Then **Anchers Hus**, the more important of the two, and **Drachmanns Hus** if time remains. โ Note that **Drachmanns Hus is seasonal with short hours** and closes in winter, while the main museum is open all year.
