The Diederichsen Building in central Ribeirão Preto was the city's first high-rise and one of the first two in inland São Paulo state, along with the Santana Building in Campinas. It stands on Rua Álvares Cabral, with sides on Rua General Osório, the pedestrian street beside Praça XV de Novembro, and Rua São Sebastião. It was built in the mid-1930s by Antônio Diederichsen, the son of German immigrants born in São Paulo in 1875, who studied agriculture in Germany, became a banker and put up several buildings in Ribeirão Preto, where he had settled after working for the «coffee baron» Francisco Schmidt. The building is a leading example of Art Deco, with geometric lines and symmetrical façades. For decades it housed the 1,200-seat Cine São Paulo and a well-known café, becoming part of the city's memory. It is seen from outside on a walk downtown, a few steps from the Theatro Pedro II.
