The Theatro Pedro II is a large theatre in central Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo state, a first-class venue for symphonic music and opera, seating 1,588 in a total area of 6,500 square metres, and considered Brazil's third-largest opera house. The theatre was born of Ribeirão Preto's coffee-era boom, when the city became Brazil's coffee capital after the Mogiana railway arrived in 1876. In the early 1920s an architectural ensemble known as the «Quarteirão Paulista» began to rise on Praça XV de Novembro, with a hotel and commercial buildings, and at its heart this grand eclectic theatre with its dome and gilded auditorium. A fire in 1980 destroyed its interior; the theatre was later restored and reopened, and it is again home to the city's symphony orchestra and its biggest performances. Tickets by programme; guided visits are sometimes offered, and it can be seen from the square at any time.
