The Kavanagh is an Art Deco apartment tower facing Plaza San Martín, one of the great symbols of modern architecture in Buenos Aires. Opened on 3 January 1936 at 120 metres, it was the tallest building in Latin America until 1947, the tallest reinforced-concrete structure in South America, and the city's first apartment building with central air conditioning. It was paid for by Corina Kavanagh, a wealthy landowner who gave it her name, and designed by the architects Sánchez, Lagos and de la Torre. Its shape is striking: a sharp-edged block whose upper floors step back like stairs to a slender tower, so it looks like a ship heading for the river, especially from the square. It is a residential building and cannot be visited inside; the best place to see it is the facing Plaza San Martín, from whose sloping lawn it shows in full, with the Torre Monumental and Retiro station close by.
