Palacio Paz was the largest and most lavish private residence in Buenos Aires, built for José C. Paz, founder of the newspaper La Prensa and Argentina's ambassador in Paris, in French Beaux-Arts style to designs by the French architect Louis-Marie Henri Sortais. With some 12,000 square metres under roof and about 140 rooms and halls, it is like a piece of Paris facing Plaza San Martín. Inside are reception rooms, marble stairs, huge chandeliers, decorated ceilings, carved wood and a large library, witnesses to the wealth of Argentina's early-twentieth-century elite. Since 1938 the palace has housed the Círculo Militar, the officers' club. It can only be seen on guided tours at set days and times, booked ahead by email, with a minimum of four people per tour.
