A broad waterfall

A broad, lovely waterfall in the Harian area on the south-west side of Lake Toba, its water spilling down a dark, stepped rock face framed by green forest and collecting in a shallow pool at its base. The water sometimes looks dark, taking the colour of the rock and volcanic soil it runs over. From the car park a short path and stairs lead to the foot of the falls, where you can get close to the spray and touch the cold water. The road there crosses the green Harian hills above the lake, with some of Samosir's finest views. The entry fee is small, about ten thousand rupiah, with simple food and coffee stalls at the entrance. The falls are fuller in the rainy season, with the clearest water and best colour in the drier months. About an hour is enough, and the stairs are slippery after rain, so take care. Combine it with the Tele tower and Mount Pusuk Buhit on a tour of the lake's west side.

The pool at the base is shallow and cold; visitors paddle and stand in the spray, but it is not for real swimming, and watch the slippery rocks.
