A viewing tower on the rim of the old caldera west of Lake Toba, on the mountain road linking Samosir Island to the mainland, with one of the widest views of the lake: blue water below, green Samosir Island, the Sianjur Mula-Mula valley the Batak regard as the home of their first ancestor, and the road twisting down the slopes. Visitors climb the tower's short stair to see the view from above, and small stalls around it serve coffee and snacks, the air cool and fresh at this height. The road there is itself lovely, its bends revealing the lake little by little. Entry is a token fee of about five thousand rupiah, and it is open in daytime. The best time is early morning, before clouds gather on the rim. The visit is short, half an hour is enough; pair it with Holbung Hill in southern Samosir, or make it a stop on the overland road from Samosir to Berastagi via the small bridge at Pangururan.
