A rocky mountain looming over Ella from the south-west, facing Little Adam's Peak across the valley. Climbing it is one of the best-known hikes in Sri Lanka's hill country, and one of the most rewarding for those who put in the effort. The trail passes through tea gardens, tall eucalyptus forest and small streams, runs alongside the railway line for part of the way, then climbs steeply in its final stretch. The round trip takes three to four hours, per visitor guides. From the top the view sweeps over the Ella Gap to the southern plains and the horizon, with the town, the surrounding hills and Little Adam's Peak across the way; on clear days the distances seem endless. The climb is free, but there are many side paths, so take a local guide or a map on your phone, start very early before the heat and the clouds, and carry plenty of water. If you walk beside the railway, keep clear of the tracks and watch for trains.
