A grand hotel at the western end of the Abu Dhabi Corniche, opened in 2005 and run by Mandarin Oriental since 2020. At roughly 11 billion dirhams it is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. WATG designed it to combine modern construction with elements of Islamic architecture such as symmetry and geometric patterns. A decorated central dome and 114 smaller domes crown the building, and its facades take their colour from the sands of the Arabian desert. Inside are gilded halls, chandeliers and marble floors under the great lobby dome with its golden ornament, and the hotel has about 390 rooms and residences. Gardens and fountains surround it, along with a long private beach overlooked by Etihad Towers. Visitors come to dine in its restaurants and cafés or to admire it from outside; it looks its best in the evening, when the building is lit and its lights reflect on the water.
