A sandbar island in the Pearl River in central Guangzhou, 3.3 km long and up to 600 m wide. It was villages and fields until the 1980s, when it was developed as a quiet residential district, and it was officially named Ersha Island in 1989. Today it is home to cultural venues including the Xinghai Concert Hall, the Guangdong Museum of Art and the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum, and its many green spaces and riverside paths have made it one of the city's best-known places for outdoor leisure. Wandering the island is free, its riverside paths suit walking and cycling, and it looks across the water to Canton Tower and the towers of Zhujiang New Town.
