Guangzhou's modern landmark, a 600 m observation and broadcast tower on the south bank of the Pearl River, which opened to visitors on 29 September 2010, just before the city hosted the Asian Games, and briefly held the title of the world's tallest tower before Tokyo Skytree overtook it. Its twisting lattice frame narrows at the middle, which is why locals call it the «Slim Waist», and after dark it lights up in changing colours that reflect on the river, so from a distance it seems to sway. Fast lifts carry visitors to enclosed and open-air decks more than 400 m up, with the whole city spread below and the towers of Zhujiang New Town across the river, while a wheel of glass cabins circles the top, along with a free-fall ride for thrill-seekers. Tickets start at about CNY 150 for the 433 m deck and reach about CNY 328 for the 488 m roof, with an all-in ticket at about CNY 398, per visitor guides. Come just before sunset, then take an evening Pearl River cruise from about CNY 50.
