Helsinki's elegant street: Esplanadi is a long park between two avenues from 1812 linking Market Square to Mannerheimintie — lime trees, a central promenade, the statue of the national poet Runeberg and a small summer stage with free concerts every summer noon, flanked by the great Finnish design stores: Marimekko, Iittala and Artek in their mother houses. At its eastern end stands the glazed Kappeli restaurant of 1867, the park's first and the city's most famous terrace, with the bandstand before it — and at the west the round white Swedish Theatre. In winter the trees glow with Christmas lights and a small market appears. Less a monument than the city's pulse: walk it from the market to the centre and you will have understood Helsinki.
