Old heart.
The old Amparo railway station is a historic building on Praça Pádua Salles, popularly called the Largo da Estação, the Station Square, in Amparo on São Paulo state's Circuito das Águas. It opened in 1875 and was operated by the Mogiana railway company. The railway reached Amparo at the height of the coffee era, when trains carried the farms' harvests to the ports and linked inland towns with one another, and the station became part of the fabric of a town that flourished with its mansions in that period. The last train left the station for Monte Alegre do Sul on 2 January 1967, and the building has remained a landmark of the square. It can be admired on a walk around Amparo's historic centre, a short stroll from the mansions and the Bernardino de Campos museum.
