Sorocaba railway station opened on 10 July 1875, built by the Sorocabana Railway as its headquarters and the starting point of its trunk line between São Paulo and Sorocaba, with the railway's great workshops around it. When the Votorantim railway arrived in 1906, the station became the interchange between the two lines. In 1929 a major renovation enlarged it into one of the Sorocabana's largest station buildings, and in the 1940s the line was electrified and electric trains began to call. A succession of state and private companies then ran it, until the last passenger train left on 15 March 2001. Today the station is one of central Sorocaba's historic buildings, its broad façade a witness to the railway's heyday, and it pairs with the railway museum next door in the old English-style house. It can be seen from outside at any time.
