The Sorocaba Railway Museum, or Sorocabana Railway Museum, stands on Praça Mateus Maylasky in the city centre near the railway station. It occupies a house built in 1910 to lodge the company's engineers and supervisors, in an English style of brick and lime; company workers made the bricks themselves, while the roof tiles came from Marseille in France. The house has eleven rooms, all devoted to the memory of the Sorocabana, nine of them upstairs with ceilings 4.5 metres high, floors of pink peroba wood and door and window frames in their original sizes. Restoration began in 1997, and the garden around it is named after Mateus Maylasky, the company's founder. The museum shows tools, uniforms, documents, photographs and models telling the story of the railway that built the region's prosperity. Entry is usually free; check times, and pair it with the station next door.
