Plaza Constitución is Argentina's largest and busiest railway station, with sixteen platforms and some hundred and fifty-six million passengers a year, the terminus of the General Roca line to the south of the country. Its grand building opened on 1 January 1887, inspired by the French château of Maisons-Laffitte; its dome was added between 1902 and 1907, it was rebuilt into its present form between 1922 and 1925, and it became a National Historic Monument in 2021. Its long facade on the square is imposing, with towers and dome; inside is a vast hall of columns under a high ceiling, and behind it iron vaults over the many platforms. Trains leave here for the southern suburbs and La Plata, and further out toward the province's coast. Entering the hall is free; visit outside rush hour. The surrounding square is busy, so keep an eye on your belongings.
