Faro's old town is the Algarve capital's surprise: behind the marina a near-complete wall rings the Cidade Velha — white, calm, calçada-paved, entered by the neoclassical Arco da Vila gate (holding within it the original horseshoe Arab gate — among Portugal's oldest Muslim remains), storks nesting on every tower and arch. Inside lie the cathedral square with its orange trees, lanes circling the municipal museum in its layered convent, and the Gate of Rest where the conquerors paused on the eastern wall — the walk being the full wall circuit between storks and lagoon views. This is the Faro that airport-passers miss: two calm hours without a single ticket — the marina and Manuel Bivar garden at its door for the closing coffee, and the Ria Formosa boats leaving from the neighbouring quay: the town literally the next trip's harbour.
