Fira is hub of every bus (Oia, Akrotiri, Kamari, Perissa, airport) — cheap but summer-crammed, stopping earlyish at night. Taxis are few and dear. The favoured fix: an ATV or small car for a day or two of edges, buses for the spine — and respect the narrow night roads.

Fira is Santorini's engine: the capital hung mid-rim where everything meets — the caldera promenade and its volcano-facing cafés, the shopping and gold lanes, the bus station mother of all lines, and the cable car dropping to the old cruise port. Its cultural treasure outweighs its reputation: the Museum of Prehistoric Thera keeps Akrotiri's masterworks — the blue monkey frescoes and gold necklaces buried thirty-six centuries ago (see it before or after the site, obligatorily) — and the Gyzi mansion is the island's elegant archive. Northward the rim walks from it: Firostefani's domes, then Imerovigli the Aegean's balcony, then Skaros rock — the loveliest walking hour, rehearsing the full Oia trail. And its night is the island's liveliest, without rival.

Akrotiri kept here — centuries before Pompeii.
Firostefani, Imerovigli, Skaros — the rim's golden hour.
