A tourist district on San Francisco's northern waterfront. It was once a real fishing port whose seafood restaurants drew outsiders; the fishing docks declined in the 1960s and 1970s and tourism took over, making it the city's busiest visitor area. It runs along Jefferson Street and nearby streets to Pier 39 and takes in the historic Aquatic Park district, lined with seafood stands, souvenir shops and small museums, and bay cruises and ferries leave from here. Its stands are known for cooked crab and thick clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl, colourful fishing boats bob in the marina, and the famous Ghirardelli chocolate shop is close by. Walking around is free. Seafood is a good choice for halal diners, but clam chowder sometimes contains bacon, so ask before ordering. The cable cars run here from downtown.
